Infusing MCT Oil with Cannabis

Capsules, edibles and tinctures are a great way to enjoy cannabis. Whether you are using it to self-medicate or enjoy an intense high, there’s something for everyone. In this post, we will discuss infusing MCT oil.

What is MCT?

Why MCT? MCT stands for medium chain triglycerides. MCT oil is found in many organic foods, including coconut oil. MCT contains both caprylic and capric fatty acids, which helps your body absorb the THC, CBD, and other cannabinoids found in marijuana.

MCT Infused Cannabis Oil is extremely versatile and we are not kidding! You can put it in capsules and swallow it, place drops in your mouth, use it to cook and bake with, put a couple drops in your coffee or tea, and even vape it like e-juice! (Disclaimer: Although vaping MCT is possible, some physicians advise against it, due to being an oil. Others feel that being a medium chain triglyceride is perfectly safe and won’t cause any health issues. Use at your own risk.)

In this post, we are going to focus directly on the process of infusing MCT oil. We will not be discussing edible recipes. However, it is easy to add the desired amount of MCT oil in place of most any other fat in your cooking.

The Slow Cooker Flower Method

So let’s get started. We are going to use 1 ounce of plant matter for this instruction. You can use more or less, depending on your availability and preference. To make infused MCT oil from plant matter, you will need the following items:

    • Crockpot or other brand slow cooker
    • 1-2 cups 100% Organic MCT Oil
    • 1 ounce Ground Material(can include buds, leaves, stems, stocks)
    • Cheese Cloth or Fine Mesh Strainer
    • Canning Jar

Some people will suggest using a lecithin to help with the absorption of cannabinoids in your system. We believe MCT is such a fantastic carrier, that no lecithin is necessary to achieve amazing results.

First, spread your ground material evenly across the bottom of your crockpot.

Then, pour your MCT oil over the top of your ground material. You will want your MCT oil to completely cover and saturate the ground material.

Decarbing Your Flower

But, what about decarbing?!?!?! For those of you that don’t know, decarbing is the act of heating your cannabis to turn the THC-A in your buds or dabs in to THC, which is a key factor in the “high” of your dosing. Lucky for us, it’s not necessary for this method. The crockpot will reach temps high enough to decarb the material for you.

Time to Cook!

Next, turn the crockpot on low or around 200 degrees Fahrenheit and allow to simmer for a minimum of 4-6 hours to extract most of the THC and CBD from the material. We like to push it a little further and simmer for 12-24 hours. The longer the simmer, the darker the oil will become, but the more cannabinoids will be pulled from the plant. Some may argue that 12-24 hours is overkill, but we disagree.

Once your crockpot has cooked and you are ready to collect your oil, turn off the crockpot and allow the oil to cool for at least 10-20 minutes. Cooling is not necessary, but will help prevent you from getting burned, in the event any of the oil drips down your hand or splatters when transferring.

Collection and Storage

Now, pour the crockpot contents through your cheese cloth or strainer, into your canning jar. There shouldn’t be any floating particles in the oil. If there are, repeat the straining process until there are no contaminants left.

At this point, you can store or further refine your MCT oil depending on how you wish to use it. We like to store it in the fridge and use to make candies or drizzle over a salad with some vinegar.

MCT & Concentrates

Rather use Concentrates? No problem! The next method works with BHO, Honey Oil, QWET, RSO, Rosin, or pretty much any other finished concentrate! We strongly suggest Rosin, or another solvent-less method. It’s not only safer in a flaming explosion sense, but its healthier for your body too!

To make Concentrate Infused MCT Oil, you will need the following materials:

  • Shot Glass
  • Microwave
  • Your Choice of Concentrate
  • 100% Organic MCT Oil
  • Dab Tool(or fork if tool unavailable)
  • Pot Holders(optional, but nice to help prevent burning your hand on the shot glass)

Before we start, we must advise you that If using a concentrate obtained from a solvent, such as BHO or QWET, you must ensure your concentrate is 100% fully purged, prior to proceeding. This is for your own safety. Dabs made with solvents can be highly flammable or even explosive, if not properly purged. For this reason, as well as health concerns, we advise Rosin as the best choice. Sometimes we will use QWET, as ethanol is considered food safe. But, we will always prefer Rosin. (Disclaimer: Making concentrates using methods such as BHO is illegal in most states due to safety concerns and is VERY VERY DANGEROUS. We strongly suggest the use of Rosin or another solventless method! Be safe! Stay within your state laws.)

First, gather a 10:1 ratio of MCT Oil to Concentrate. For instance, if you are using 1 gram of concentrates, you will need 10 milliliters of MCT Oil.

Place just the MCT Oil in the shot glass and microwave it on high for 1 minute. Then carefully pull your shot glass from the microwave and place it on the counter. Be careful! It may be hot!

With your dab tool, collect all the concentrate onto the tool and thoroughly mix your concentrate into your oil. Continue to stir until completely dissolved. If the concentrate does not fully dissolve, heat the oil in the microwave for another 30 seconds and try again.

Once fully mixed, you will have effectively made an oil with a potency of 0.1 grams concentrate per 1 milliliter of oil. If you would like a stronger oil, for tinctures or vaping, use half the recommended amount of oil. You can also experiment yourself, to adjust potency. Now you are able to use the MCT Oil as is or further refine it for your end purpose.
